Landscaping & Environmental Works – Sidi Bel Abbès Tramway Line, Algeria
Client: SNTF
Main Contractor: Yapı Merkezi A.Ş. – Alstom Consortium
Line Length: 15.2 km | 26 Stations + CDM Maintenance Facility
Location: Sidi Bel Abbès, Algeria
This project involved the execution of comprehensive landscaping and environmental works for the first tramway line of Sidi Bel Abbès, delivered as part of the Yapı Merkezi – Alstom Consortium works for SNTF. The scope covered the full 15.2 km tramway alignment, associated stations, major roundabouts, and the CDM maintenance depot, aiming to integrate the rail infrastructure into the urban environment while enhancing visual quality and environmental comfort.
Along the tramway line, works included the protection of existing vegetation (approximately 480 trees and 90+ palm trees), large-scale grassing works over more than 12,500 m², and the planting of hundreds of high-canopy and ornamental trees such as jacaranda, ficus, fraxinus, sophora, melia, cypress, pistachio, palms, and washingtonia. These interventions were designed to provide shade, improve microclimatic conditions, and reinforce the urban identity of the corridor.
Special landscaping works were carried out at several strategic roundabouts, including Jardin, Petit Vichy, Ben Hammouda, Campus, Le Rocher, and Jardin Dubai. These areas featured a combination of isolated trees, palm trees, shrubs, hedges, flowering plants, and turf, supported by dedicated planting pits and trench excavations. A wide palette of species—such as oleander, lavender, lantana, pittosporum, gazania, hibiscus, jasmine, strelitzia, agave, and seasonal flowers—was implemented to create visually distinctive and durable urban landscapes.
At the CDM maintenance facility, extensive environmental works were executed, including over 11,500 m² of turf installation, tree and shrub planting, climbing plants along pedestrian paths, and structured hedge systems. The overall project demonstrates strong expertise in large-scale urban landscaping, vegetation management, and environmental integration for rail infrastructure, contributing significantly to the modernization and livability of Sidi Bel Abbès’ public transport environment.
